Union asking SD68 to reconsider making cuts to support staff

The Nanaimo Ladysmith School District is looking to make cuts to deal with a budget shortfall, but the union representing support staff is asking them to spare its members.

Rob Zver is the President of CUPE local 606. He told SD68’s business committee this week to reconsider cutting 23 janitors and 11 field facilities workers over two years.

Zver says he’s asking the board to turn over some more rocks to see if there’s any other way to save the money they need without the cuts.

The Board agreed to keep looking at the options…a process that continued at a business committee meeting on Wednesday night.

The deadline to finalize the budget is June 30th.
