MP Jean Crowder’s derelict vessels bill fails without Conservative support

Nanaimo-Cowichan MP Jean Crowder’s private members bill on derelict vessels has been defeated in a House of Commons vote…

Crowder’s been working for years to get legislation through that would make the Coast Guard the so-called “receiver of wrecks”, giving local governments and others a single authority to turn to deal with an abandoned boat.

Crowder says the bill failed, because only one Conservative MP voted in favour.

NDP leader Tom Mulcair is expected to speak on the derelict vessels issue as he visits the Island today.

Coast Guard cuts and oil spill response are also on the agenda for events in Ladysmith at 1:00pm and Mill Bay at 2:45pm and a big party rally in Victoria.
