Shawnigan Lake residents demonstrate through dance at SIA facility

Some Shawnigan Lake residents demonstrated through dance today at the South Island Aggregates facility.

The site got a permit from the province to receive up to 100,000 tons of contaminated soil per year, for fifty years. Trucks filled with soil have already started arriving.

Shawnigan Lake resident Shelagh Bell-Irving says they’re worried water in the area is going to be contaminated as a result.

Bell-Irving says the peaceful demonstration was about celebrating clean water, and raising awareness about the issue.

She says if it can happen in Shawnigan Lake it can happen anywhere in BC, and they’re not giving up.

Meanwhile, the Shawnigan Residents Association wants the permit reversed and have filed for a review in BC Supreme Court. The Environmental Appeal Board denied an attempt to get the permit overturned in March.
