Routley on toxic soil permit: Polak letting SIA operate ‘above the law’

More questions for the Environment Minister about the South Island Aggregates plan for a contaminated soil dump near Shawnigan Lake.

CVRD Director Sonia Furstenau, along with concerned residents, was back in Victoria on Thursday…and in Question Period, Cowichan Valley MLA Bill Routley accused the Environment Minister of letting the company operate “above the law.”

Mary Polak, though, says Routley has the issue confused. She says there are several permits covering the two sites, known as lot 21 and lot 23.   And one of those does allow SIA to take certain types of contaminated soil right away.

Meanwhile…SIA officials say they won’t comment because the issue is now in the courts.
