United Steelworkers union serves CVRD with strike notice

The Cowichan Valley Regional District is facing the threat of strike action from the United Steelworkers union.

The CVRD says it’s been served a 72 hour strike notice…meaning the union could launch job action just after 1pm on Monday.

The union represents 50 CVRD employees who work at Cowichan Lake Recreation, the Bings Creek, Meade Creek and Peerless Road transfer stations and in the Regional District’s water and sewer department

The CVRD says it expects to hear from the Labour Relations Board early Monday about which jobs will be ruled essential services if any action goes ahead.

CVRD CAO Brian Carruthers says the two sides have had five bargaining sessions but remain apart on wage and benefit issues.
