Island Health says kindergarten registration is a good chance to ensure shot are up to date

Some BC health authorities are running campaigns encouraging parents to make sure kids entering kindergarten in September have up to date vaccinations.

Dr. Paul Hasselback of Island Health says they’re not doing any special awareness campaign along those lines, but they spread the message through public health nurses.

He says one concern for Island Health is parents who start with vaccinations, but don’t follow up.

Hasselback says although there’s been a slight decline over recent years, the number of school children with shots is generally high enough to ensure a “herd immunity” effect.
