Nanaimo Ladysmith Board looks to change numbers, and consider school closures

Changes to the Board make-up, and possible school closures are on the table for the Nanaimo Ladysmith School District.

The Board’s business committee voted this week to look at going from 9 to 7 Trustees.

Chair Steve Rae says they’re making cuts right across the District in an effort to save money, so it’s an idea worth considering. He says they’re also looking at a ward system.


The Ministry of Education would have to approve any changes.

Rae says the District’s updated facilities plan includes the possibility of school closures, but he says it’s still early in the process and people shouldn’t panic.

A staff recommendation is expected in the fall. Rutherford, Departure Bay, Woodlands, and North Cedar Intermediate are the schools that could be on the list
