Opponents of the South Island Aggregates contaminated soil dump near Shawnigan Lake mounted a blockade Monday, and they say we can expect more of the same unless the Environment Ministry revokes the company’s permits.
About 100 people demonstrated outside the facility’s gates… including federal Green leader Elizabeth May, MLAs Doug Routley and Gary Holman, and CVRD Director Sonia Fursteneau.
Fursteneau says efforts are “ongoing” on the political front, after intensive lobbying in Victoria this spring, and pressure in the Legislature, didn’t get immediate results.

The CVRD and the Shawnigan Residents Association have gone back to court to try to get the permits quashed.
