CVRD, United Steelworkers reach tentative deal in labour dispute

The Cowichan Valley Regional District and the United Steelworkers union have reached a deal in principle in their current labour dispute.

CVRD officials say the agreement is pending ratification votes by both parties next month. They add details are not being released at this point in time, however, the deal generally follows the terms of the agreements reached between the CVRD and its other unions.

Officials say both sides are no longer talking to the Labour Relations Board about which jobs should be ruled essential services in the case of a strike.

They say the CVRD and union meet over the past couple of weeks in an attempt to resolve a dispute that almost resulted in a work stoppage last month.

The union represents 50 CVRD employees who work at Cowichan Lake Recreation, the Bings Creek, Meade Creek and Peerless Road transfer stations and in the Regional District’s water and sewer department.
