Island Health offering more support, shorter wait times, for bariatric surgery patients

Island Health is working to shorten the wait times for bariatric surgery, and offer patients more support pre and post op.

The procedure reduces the size of the stomach and can lead to significant weight loss.

Dr. Ali Zentner specializes in obesity. She says a multidisciplinary approach is best, involving specialists from cardiologists to dietitians.


Zentner says patients need to be properly educated before the surgery, and get support afterwards when it comes to things like diet and exercise.

Island Health expects to do upwards of 170 bariatric surgeries this year.
