Coastal Fire Centre says Cassidy/Cedar fire remains 80% contained

The Coastal Fire Centre says the fire that flared up in a hay field near the Nanaimo Airport Thursday afternoon remains 80 per cent contained.

A Friday afternoon update from the Town of Ladysmith describes the fire as still active, and says crews are putting out hot spots in trees and smoldering fields.

It’s believed sparks from the hay cutting equipment triggered the blaze.

Fire Information Officer Donna MacPherson says their teams continue to assist local fire departments as they work to get it out.

People have been allowed to return to the handful of homes that were evacuated, but they’re still on alert.

Officials in Ladysmith say the Town is keeping its Emergency Operations Centre activated for the time being, to support the fire crews.
