Catalyst reducing fresh water usage at Crofton mill

Vancouver Island is now in a Level 4 drought, and that’s created concerns about fish populations and whether one of the area’s biggest industries will be impacted.

Rob Belanger is the Vice President and GM of operations at Catalyst Paper’s Crofton mill.

He says they work closely with the Cowichan Watershed Board, and they’ve taken a lot of steps to reduce the water they use.

Belanger says one strategy they’ve had success with is using sea-water for more of the cooling and other parts of the operation that relied on fresh water in the past.

He says the company is confident at this point that the drought will not force them to suspend operations
