$90 million spent so far fighting BC wildfires

The province provided an update this afternoon about the many wildfires burning in BC.

Kurtis Isfeld,with the BC Wildfire Service says there are 184 fires, 23 of which started yesterday.

He says about $90 million has been spent so far fighting fires, and their crews are stretched to the limit.

Isfeld says they’ve asked for additional help, including 10 additional unit crews and 20 additional initial attack crews.

At least 70 personnel will soon be arriving from Ontario to help.

As for the Martin Mars water bomber? Here’s what Forests Minister Steve Thomson had to say:

The Dog Mountain fire on Sproat Lake is at 96 hectares, and near Port Hardy, there’s a 16 hectare fire that’s 20% contained.

The Old Sechelt Mine fire on the Sunshine Coast is still pegged at 250 hectares, and it’s 40% contained.

The Boulder Creek fire near Pemberton is 5000 hectares and the Elaho Fire is at 20,000.

A Wildfire Smoke Advisory remains in effect for the east and south coast of Vancouver Island.
