Crews get Dog Mountain fire fully contained, weather improving air quality

The BC Wildfire Service says they’ve now got the Dog Mountain fire (shown above) near Sproat Lake 100 per cent contained, at 450 hectares.

The controlled burns are finished, and the fire is still considered “active”.

Crews will also keep Structural Protection Units (a type of sprinkler system) on several cabins in the area to prevent them from being ignited by hot embers. One cabin was destroyed on July 5th.

The Old Sechelt Mine fire is sitting at 75 per cent contained, and 400 hectares. Smaller controlled burns are planned along the fire lines in the North and South.

Evacuation orders remain in place because of both fires. Carlson Point in the SCRD, and in the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District for 18 cabins at the base of the Dog Mountain fire.

The evacuation alert because of the Tsulquate Creek fire near Port Hardy has ended.

And, as hoped, the changing weather pattern has improved air quality somewhat. Air quality advisories for the Sunshine Coast, Sea-to-Sky, and Eastern Vancouver Island have been cancelled.
