Shawnigan Lake residents blast provincial officials over toxic soil dump

Hundreds of concerned, and at times frustrated, residents packed the Kerry Park Rec Centre on Thursday night to hear about environmental testing fromĀ an area around aĀ contaminatedĀ soil dump near Shawnigan Lake.

Green MLA Andrew Weaver drew a standing ovation as he questioned how the tests were done. He says they need to be taking samples from deeper below the surface.

The Ministry of Environment’s Jennifer McGuire, though,Ā says the results show drinking water hasn’t been compromised.

Several residentsĀ left the meeting saying they heard a lot of technical talk, but, didn’t get the answers they came for.
