VIU set to launch first-of-kind program aimed at health in First Nations communities

VIU has a new program starting in September aimed at promoting health in aboriginal communities.

Dr Carole Stuart is VIU’s Dean of Health & Human Services.

She says the Inter Tribal Health Authority asked them to develop a program to educate and train Community Health Representatives.

Stuart says the program will cover community health education, health promotion, injury prevention, and community development.

The program will be based out of VIU’s Parksville/Qualicum Centre. The Ministry of Advanced Education provided $95,000 to support 12 seats.
