New scam warnings from North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP

A couple of new scam warnings from North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP.

Police say they’ve seen another jump in reports of calls – often aggressive and harassing – from people claiming to be with the Canada Revenue Agency.

The fake CRA agent threatens legal action, unless the target send money.

And, RCMP say someone has been going around to Cowichan Valley businesses asking for donations in support of the Cowichan Valley Basket Society.

The Society says it hasn’t authorized anyone to solicit for money or products under their name.

“If you wish to donate to the food bank, direct donations work best, either food items or cash is always welcome.” says Colleen Fuller, Manager of the Cowichan Valley Basket Society.

The society serves approximately 450 hampers a month, their soup kitchen dispenses 2600 sandwiches and 2300 bowls of soup every month and they have a salad bar open 6 days a week.

RCMP are urging people who think they’re being targeted by fraudsters to report it.  “ If we know what scams are out there, we are better able to inform the public and save some citizens a bit of grief,” says Cpl. Krista Hobday.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP are at 250-748-5522.

The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre also provides a lot of information on scams making the rounds.
