The redoubtable Martin Mars water bomber was called up Tuesday to help deal with a wildfire near Skutz Falls, off Highway 18.

Coastal Fire Centre says the fire – which is now at 10 hectares – is burning through logging slash on a block of private managed forest land.

They also say it appears to have been human caused.

The Coastal Fire Centre crews are working with firefighters from Lake Cowichan, and a team from the forestry company that owns the land.

Fire Information Officer Donna MacPherson says the fire has spread into nearby trees, but remains confined to the company property.

Highway 18 had to be closed for a time Tuesday, but MacPherson says they don’t anticipate any closures Wednesday.  However, they do have a favour to ask of drivers.

There are no evacuation alerts or orders as a result of the blaze.
