Malahat chief resigns amidst allegations over payments from SIA

The chief of the Malahat First Nation has stepped down over allegations he was getting a consulting fee from South Island Aggregates.

SIA is the operator of a contaminated soil dump near Shawnigan Lake.

The Shawnigan Residents Association claims recently disclosed documents that show now-former Chief Michael Harry was getting a “consulting fee per tonne of soil.”

Malahat First Nation CEO Lawrence Lewis says the resignation won’t stop the band from moving forward with day-to-day business. He says Tommy Harry has been appointed as the interim chief.

The allegations have not been proved in court.
