Lizard Lake wildfire now an estimated 250 hectares, 20 per cent contained

The Lizard Lake wildfire that is burning 27 kilometres southwest of Lake Cowichan is 20 per cent contained.

The Coastal Fire Centre’s Donna MacPherson says the Pacific Circle Highway between Port Renfrew and Lake Cowichan will remain closed for the foreseeable future due to the now estimated 250-hectare blaze.

She says 90 firefighters, 7 helicopters,  heavy machinery and a 16-person Incident Management Team are working on it.

Meanwhile, as a result of that fire the province has issued a Smoky Skies Advisory for the Port Renfrew area and the Cowichan Valley. That includes Lake Cowichan, Duncan, Crofton, Cobble Hill, Mill Bay & Shawnigan Lake.

Officials say infants, elders and people with heart or lung disease should avoid strenuous activities and prolonged exposure to smoke.
