Fentanyl problem showing up on Island as well as Lower Mainland

The Regional Coroner for Vancouver Island says they’ve been seeing the same spike in fentanyl related deaths that’s being noticed by authorities on the lower mainland.

Matt Brown says the cases on the Island so far seem to involve fentanyl mixed with other drugs, although some people may be using the painkiller by itself.

Brown says from the beginning of the year to May 31st alone there were seven fatalities in Nanaimo, two in Victoria, two in Campbell River, and one in Courtenay.

Brown says they’re still trying to determine what killed a man and woman found dead in an SUV in Campbell River last week. Foul play has been ruled out
