NDP unveils plan for mitigating natural disasters

NDP Leader Tom Mulcair made a stop in Nanaimo today to share the NDP’s plan for dealing with natural disasters.

With a contingent of Nanaimo Fire Rescue members standing by, Mulcair said wildfires and floods pose a major public safety risk.

Mulcair says the NDP would restore $7 million dollars in funding to the Joint Emergency Preparedness Program, and invest in training programs formerly provided by the Canadian Emergency Management College.

He says the NDP would also make sure provinces and territories have better access to financial aid in case of a natural disaster.

Mulcair wasn’t the only federal leader on Vancouver Island today. Green Party Leader Elizabeth May was in her Saanich-Gulf Islands riding to unveil her party’s policy on pipelines and tankers.
