Excavator operator escapes injury after machine hit with random gunshot

A reminder about gun safety from RCMP, after a near miss in Cobble Hill.

North Cowichan Duncan RCMP say they had a call around 10 Monday morning from a job site on Cavin Road.

A 57 year old excavator operator was in his machine when the back window suddenly shattered.

RCMP discovered a bullet did the damage, but after patrolling the area and talking with neighbours they couldn’t figure out where the shot came from.

Police say it’s sheer luck that the man wasn’t injured.

“Although it is a semi rural area, firing weapons, not knowing where the rounds may end up, is a dangerous and illegal practice,” says Cpl. Krista Hobday. “We are very lucky a smashed window was the only casualty of the day, this could have had a very tragic outcome.”
