Malahat Nation, Steelhead LNG poised to announce joint project

News of a joint announcement from the Malahat First Nation and Steelhead LNG is leading to more speculation the Nation’s newly acquired land in Bamberton could be used as an LNG facility.

Malahat and Steelhead are only confirming that Thursday’s announcement is about “an LNG project on Vancouver Island”. They haven’t given any details about the location, or whether it’s going to be a full-scale liquefaction and tanker facility or something else.

As recently as last week officials with the Malahat Nation were responding to talk about an LNG project at Bamberton by saying they were looking at several opportunities for the site, but had nothing to report.

Vancouver-based Steelhead is already working with the Huu-ay-aht First Nations on a potential LNG facility at Sarita Bay, 75 kilometres southwest of Port Alberni
