Nanaimo gold medalist carrying Canadian flag in Olympic closing ceremonies

Gold-medal-winning Ethan Katzberg from Nanaimo is carrying the Canadian flag during the Olympic closing ceremonies today.

Katzberg won gold in the men’s hammer throw with a result just a few centimetres short of the all-time Olympic record. It’s the first time in 120 years that Canada has won a gold in any throwing event.

He will be joined by swimmer Summer McIntosh, who won three gold medals, the most ever by a Canadian athlete in the summer Olympics, and a silver. She also set two Olympic records.

It was the second-best year ever for Canada at a summer Olympics. Canadian athletes brought home 27 medals, nine gold, seven silver, and 11 bronze.

The ceremony began at noon, it can be viewed live through CBC Gem.
