Hydro working to clear up last remaining outages after storm lashes the region

BC Hydro says it’s brought in crews from around the province, as it works to restore power to around 187-thousand customers still off the grid because of the weekend storm.

It’s down to around 1-thousand Island-wide, with one of the biggest remaining outages on Thetis Island. Ted Olynyk of BC Hydro says the Island escaped the worst of it, but they’re expecting trouble again Sunday night as the next wave of the weather system moves through.

Hydro is also having its own problems. The website bchydro.com has been hit with technical issues, and people haven’t been able to get updates on the outage situation. The utility has set up a temporary page and is sending up PDF documents with outage lists.

If your power is out you can call *HYDRO (49376) on a mobile phone, or 1-888-POWER ON (769-3766).

Hydro says in terms of power outages this is the worst storm since the massive November storms of 2006, with upwards of 500-thousand customers out at the height of it.

When the worst of the storm went through the region on Saturday downed wires and debris caused shut downs and lane closures on several highways and side roads. Drive BC is not reporting any major problems today.
