North Cowichan residents to see address change

North Cowichan residents will soon get to use their own community’s name instead of using Duncan for their mailing address.

The municipality is the one of the oldest in BC, and after celebrating more than 150 years Mayor Rob Douglas says it’s time to make the adjustment with Canada Post.

“North Cowichan staff are working with Canada Post on harmonizing the town name for addresses that are currently using Duncan,” he says. “The change is expected to be implemented in 2025.”

Douglas says in a Facebook post that all too often people are getting mixed up when trying to locate a house or business, and making the change will help provide clarity.

“Many residents, and businesses, are unable to use their official mailing address,” he says. “This lack of recognition causes ongoing confusion about where people actually live and do business.”

According to Douglas, the initiative comes from North Cowichan’s 150th anniversary celebrations in 2023.

Similar ventures have been taken in Langford when council was able to change their postal addresses from Victoria.

Canada Post says the change is expected next year, and they will notify businesses and residents once they’re ready to make the switch.
