Canadians across the country are honouring Indigenous Veterans Day today.
The day serves to recognize the contributions First Nations peoples who have served or continue to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces.
B.C. Premier David Eby said flags have been lowered to half-mast today outside the B.C. Parliament Buildings.
“Over the years, Indigenous people have displayed incredible strength, determinations, generosity, resilience and courage, and are a source of immense pride and respect for their families, communities and all Canadians.”
Indigenous troops have served in both the First and Second World Wars, the Korean War, and the Gulf War as well as missions in Afghanistan, Bosnia, and Kosovo among others.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said organizations will be funded for hosting remembrance initiatives for Indigenous Veterans.
“On this Indigenous Veterans Day, and every day, we thank all First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Veterans and their families for their service and sacrifice.”
Over 2,700 Indigenous people continue to serve in the Canadian Armed Forces.
