North Cow mayor says new ‘team’ approach to tackling domestic violence shows promise

Several local agencies are teaming up to curb domestic violence problems in North Cowichan and Duncan.

North Cowichan Mayor Jon Lefebure says the Council was briefed recently on the Inter-agency Case Assessment Team.

It will include RCMP, child welfare, social services and victim support agencies.

“Council had been aware and very concerned that domestic violence in North Cowichan and Duncan seemed to have a higher rate than other locations,” he says. “We’ve repeatedly asked the RCMP to focus on that.”

Lefebure says the overall goal of ICAT is to increase community safety and reduce harm caused by domestic violence.

“There’s a team commitment to more interventions for victims and monitoring, management and support for offenders as well,” he says. “So, overall increase the safety for victims and help the offenders find a way out of their sometimes chronic domestic violence situation.”
