Herd Road opens Monday, but road work continues, North Cowichan mayor

Starting Monday, traffic on Herd Road will start moving freely again, but North Cowichan’s mayor says other detours will be in place.

The road is scheduled to re-open around mid-afternoon between the Trans-Canada Highway and Bell McKinnon Road, and mayor Rob Douglas says he appreciates everyone’s patience while the road was closed.

He says in a social media post the next phase will start Tuesday.

“With Herd Road opening, Bell McKinnon Road will be closing between Herd and Norcross for the installation of new sewer and water mains,” he says. “The closure will remain in effect until approximately March.”

He says during the closure, the road will only be open to local traffic, school buses, emergency vehicles and collection services, as well as Mays Road and Norcross will be local only traffic routes and no heavy trucks.

The first phase was to help complete a water main replacement on Herd Road, reducing and widening of the eastbound highway traffic lane, and replace drainage infrastructure along Herd Road and the highway.
