Islands Trust wants some tweaks to incoming groundwater legislation

The province is bringing in new rules around groundwater next year.

The Islands Trust says it supports the move, but has some suggestions as well

Trust Chair Peter Luckham lays them out in a letter to environment minister Mary Polak.

He says water has been a top concern for the trust since the early ’80s, but this year’s drought is putting it into sharp focus.

Among the things the Trust wants is a guarantee local governments will have a say in new water licenses.

Luckham says the Trust is also hoping the province will agree to fund studies of the aquifers throughout the Islands Trust Area.
