Federal Conservative leader tours Island businesses, holds full-house rally in Powell River

Federal Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre spoke to a packed house in Powell River last night, as part of several days of campaigning on Vancouver Island.

According to his social media posts, more than a thousand people attended the event, which he described as a call for an “axe the tax election.” Poilievre was accompanied by filmmaker Aaron Gunn, who will run to represent the North Island and Powell River in the next federal election.

Earlier this week Poilievre visited Victoria, then made stops at businesses in Nanaimo and Oceanside along with Nanaimo-Ladysmith candidate Tamara Kronis.

He visited heavy equipment manufacturers, a company that makes stone materials for home interiors, and also spoke with residents at a long-term care facility in Nanaimo.

Today he spoke with small business owners in Powell River.

A common theme at all his appearances was his repeated promise to get rid of the carbon tax, pointing out how its removal will help businesses cut production costs and spend less getting their products to market.

He also said the country’s tax regime in general leaves Canada unable to compete with Trump’s America, which will siphon jobs and industries south unless something is done to help Canadian businesses be more competitive.

He said his first move as prime minister would be tax cuts to help build Canadian industries and businesses, and promised to retaliate against any tariffs imposed by a Trump administration on Canadian exports.

Poilievre will be in BC until Friday.
