Four families have been left homeless by a fire on Penelakut Island Thursday night.
The Penelakut Fire Department, with assistance from the North Cowichan and Thetis Island Fire Departments, responded to the fire and everyone inside the residences were able to get out safely.
Penelakut Chief Chakeenakwaut (Pam) Jack says she is grateful that all families in the affected homes made it out safely and have temporary housing at local hotels.
Chief Jack is expressing her deepest gratitude to the Penelakut Fire Department for its outstanding efforts in extinguishing the fire at the five-plex. She’s also thanking the North Cowichan and Thetis Island Fire Departments for their prompt deployment of teams, and Lyackson Chief Thomas for deploying a crew to Penelakut Island.
A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to assist the families left homeless and donations of clothing are being accepted.
