Government officials and First Nations Leaders meeting to strengthen relationships

The First Nation’s leaders and B.C. government officials are looking to collaborate on ways to improve government-to-government relationships through a meeting this week.

The ninth B.C. cabinet and First Nations Leaders’ Gathering starts today at the Vancouver Convention Centre West.

Premier David Eby said people around the province are struggling with affordability, housing, and the toxic drug crisis especially in First Nation communities.

“We have done a lot of good work together, and my team and I are here to build on that strong foundation to continue delivering meaningful changes for people and communities on the ground.”

The two-day gathering provides time and space for the new and returning provincial politicians to learn more about individual First Nations and have them voice concerns regarding their communities.

Eby and other cabinet ministers will also be able to share governments priorities to fix their concerns and ministerial commitments.

More than 200 First Nations have registered to attend including over 1,000 people with over 1,300 one-on-one meetings scheduled.

The gathering is co-hosted between the provincial government and the First Nations Leadership Council, comprised of the British Columbia Assembly of First Nations, the First Nations Summit and the Union of BC Indian Chiefs.
