UPDATE: RCMP dive team recovers body in Mill Bay after SUV drives off ferry dock

UPDATE 5:05pm:

Shawnigan Lake RCMP say, “The RCMP West Coast Marine Service and the Vancouver Island District RCMP Underwater Recovery with the assistance of the Mill Bay Fire Department have been successful in recovering the driver and only occupant, along with his vehicle from the water.

A 90 year old male has been pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Mill Bay Ferry Dock will remain closed and ferry sailings cancelled until such time that it is deemed safe to re-open.”

ORIGINAL STORY:

Ferry service between Mill Bay and Brentwood Bay has been suspended for the day after a serious incident on Friday morning at the Mill Bay terminal.

BC Ferries’ Deborah Marshall says a white SUV launched itself off the dock and into the water about five minutes after the MV Klitsa left the terminal.

Corporal Janelle Shoihet speaks on behalf of the RCMP.

Shoihet says the sunken SUV is impacting the mobility of the ferry around the terminal. She says drivers can use the Trans-Canada Highway and Highway 17 as an alternate route for the day.

The BC Coroners Service is also investigating the incident.
