Schools across Island and Coast are closed due to weather

No going to school today as several school districts and one college are closed on the Island and Coast.

On social media, School District 71 in the Comox Valley, School District 72 in Campbell River, School District 47 in Powell River, School District 46 in Sunshine Coast, and School District 79 in the Cowichan Valley announced they are closing all schools because of the ongoing snowfall and ice conditions.

Along with no classes, district programs, events, facility rentals and field trips are also cancelled to keep students safe.

For Courtenay, the city says all other recreation programs from this morning to noon have been cancelled. Recreation programs are good to run for Courtenay this afternoon.

School District 72 says if you had reserved the use of one of the facilities today, they ask you to contact their school board office for a refund.

College students are also getting no classes as North Island College announced their campuses in Comox Valley and Campbell River are closed for today.

Despite no in-person classes, the college says digital classes and those in independent practicums will still continue.

“Employees working remotely will continue to do so, but those scheduled to work onsite are not expected to come in due to safety concerns,” said North Island College.

According to Environment Canada, the snow is expected to die down between midday and afternoon today.
