SD 68 starts 60-day consultation on possible school closures

The Nanaimo Ladysmith School Board has started the clock running on a 60 day consultation on their latest facilities plan.

It could include closing Rutherford Elementary, Woodlands Secondary, North Cedar Intermediate, Woodbank Primary, and the district’s Learn-At-Home programs.

Dale Burgos is SD68’s Communications Manager.

“The Board was very clear, that we are moving ahead with the consultation but it’s not a vote to close schools at this point,” he says. “They basically want to hear from the community during the consultation and once we receive all of the feedback, that’s when the Board makes their decision.”

As well as taking submissions in writing and online, Burgos says meetings will be held various SD68 schools throughout October. The dates are still being finalized
