Ukraine supporters gathered in Comox today to mark the 3-year-anniversary since the country’s war with Russia began.
Hosted by the Comox Valley Ukranian Cultural Society, the event aimed to show solidarity for many who have been and are still affected by the ongoing war, while bringing community members together.
The event, which took place at Marina Park, saw performances of Ukranian songs and residents offering their thoughts and support.
Guest speaker for the event, Slav, says three years ago, some people didn’t believe the conflict would last long.
“I was preparing for the worst,” said Slav. “I was born in Ukraine, and so I knew what Russia was like and what they want. I knew it was not going to take weeks or months, it was going to be for a long time.”
Slav says since the war began, the support from the Comox Valley community has been steady and constant, helping Ukrainian families establish themselves by offering skills and English classes.
“We have a lot of people who are newcomers now and they are also included in the work whether it’s helping others who are coming to the Valley or have already settled into the Valley,” said Slav.
With another round of peace talks set between the US and Russia this month, he says for the war to end, it needs to be under Ukraine’s terms.
In the meantime, he and the Cultural Society are thinking of other events and occasions to hold to continue showing support, but to also unite community members together.
He encourages community members to donate, attend rallies or hold your own rallies.
