Union calls for mediator in talks between Transdev and striking Cowichan transit workers

Unifor is asking the Labour Relations Board to appoint a mediator in negotiations between striking Cowichan Valley transit workers and Transdev.

Transit drivers, cleaners and mechanics, and handyDART operators have been on strike since February 8th.

The two sides met for negotiations on February 27th, but Unifor says they remain far apart on key issues, including wages and benefits.

The union is calling for Transdev to improve working conditions, particularly for breaks and safe and clean washroom facilities for drivers.

Unifor Western Regional Director Gavin McGarrigle says members of Local 114 and 333 should receive the respect they deserve in a collective agreement, and a mediator can help them get a deal.

“Our members want to get back to work, but with what is likely to be economic bumpy times ahead, they need improved wages and benefits to help cushion the blow. They also need safeguards to know that they will be treated with basic human rights – like accessing appropriate washroom facilities and having proper breaks.”

Unifor Local 114 represents 44 transit operators, cleaners and mechanics, and Local 333 BC represents eight handyDART accessible transit operators.

Transdev operates bus and handyDART services on behalf of BC Transit in communities around the province.
