Privacy commissioner: BC’s health authorities need to do more to protect patient info

BC’s Information and Privacy Commissioner is making 13 recommendations to health authorities to better protect patient information.

Elizabeth Denham says in an age of electronic records, there are more and more cases of employees “snooping.”

Island Health has seen a few of those cases in the past two years.

But, Denham says it’s also one of the health authorities doing the best job at protecting privacy, and dealing with violations of the rules.

At least three employees have been fired by Island Health as a result of privacy breaches.
