Public forums on possible school closures starting today

School closures will be up for discussion this week at a series of public forums hosted by the Nanaimo Ladysmith School Board.

They’re seeking feedback on the district’s updated Facilities Plan, which includes proposals to close Rutherford Elementary, Woodlands Secondary, North Cedar Intermediate, Woodbank Primary, and the District’s Learn-At-Home programs.

There’s a meeting on Tuesday at North Cedar Intermediate from 7-9pm, and on Thursday from 7-9pm at Rutherford Elementary, which the District is considering closing in June of 2017.

Three of Deidre Tansey’s children go to Rutherford Elementary. She’s part of the group “Rutherford Open and Thriving”, and she says parents need to participate in the consultation process.

All four of Chelsea Slobodan’s kids go to Departure Bay Eco-School, which the District was considering closing until parents took a stand.

There are additional meetings happening over the next two weeks at Frank Ney Elementary, Woodlands Secondary and NDSS. Check out SD68’s website for more details. There’s also an online survey if you’re unable to attend one of the meetings. The consultation period ends November 15th.
