Duncan company hired by RDN to do bird control at regional landfill

A Duncan company has been hired by the Regional District of Nanaimo to use hawks, eagles and falcons to scare away gulls at the regional landfill.

Robyn Radcliffe with Pacific Northwest Raptors says gulls create several issues at the landfill.

Radcliffe says raptors scare the gulls away because they’re a natural predator, so it’s an environmentally-friendly solution.

Radcliffe says they’ve been working on and off at the regional landfill since 2002. The three-year contract at the landfill is worth $278,000. The company also has contracts to do bird control at several landfills along the coast, and at the Victoria and Vancouver airports.
