Ferries says busy Thanksgiving comes down to college kids heading home for a visit

It’s the first long weekend of the term for university and college students… and BC Ferries says students returning home to get a good meal and do some laundry will make up the bulk of the busy long weekend traffic load – especially when it comes to walk-ons.

Darin Guenette speaks for BC Ferries. “It is an anomaly, in that the Thanksgiving long weekend is our busiest foot traffic weekend of the year,” he says. “Even higher than all the summer weekends, and other long weekends.”

Guenette admits BC Ferries doesn’t have any scientific proof that the extra traffic is mainly students, but he says the anecdotal evidence over the years is pretty strong.

Either way, Guenette says that means on this weekend, more than almost any other, there’s the possibility of a foot passenger overload, and full long term parking.

Ferries is recommending walk-ons get to the terminals earlier than usual.

Extra sailings have been scheduled on Tsawwassen – Swartz Bay and Horseshoe Bay – Departure Bay, as well as one extra trip Sunday evening on the Langdale Route.
