BC’s NDP and the Liberal government agree a new Canada US softwood lumber deal needs to be a top priority.

The existing deal just expired, but there’s a clause allowing it to stay in force an extra year while federal negotiators hammer out a new pact.

Nicholas Simons is the NDP critic for Coastal Economic Development. He says they support the premier’s call to get a new deal as quickly as possible, and he wishes her support for the industry was this robust all the time.

The US remains the top market for BC lumber, with Japan and China after that. The government has a trade mission planned for Asia soon, aimed in part at boosting those markets for wood products.
