Fire similarities sparks investigation by Duncan Fire Department

A fire on Sunday is being labelled as suspicious, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause after a similar one broke out in the same vicinity.

Acting fire chief Geoff Spriggs says the fire broke out around 3:00 a.m. on Vista Road in Duncan, and the fire had fully taken over the structure upon their arrival.

“When we arrived, we found a fully involved fire on the side of the building,” Spriggs says. “It was sort of a carport garage structure, and it was already extending into the roofline of the house.”

The fire is being labeled as suspicious because of its proximity to a fire in North Cowichan only moments before, and Spriggs says both fires are being examined in a joint investigation.

“There are similarities,” he says. “The RCMP have determined the fire as suspicious and they’re investigating, and we’re going through a more comprehensive fire investigation. This will help us make the next determinations.”

Spriggs says there were occupants in the house when the fire started, but there were no injuries or fatalities in the blaze.
