TSB investigation begins, Search continues for missing person after fatal whale watching accident

A Transportation Safety Board investigation team is due to arrive in Tofino Monday,  after a fatal accident involving a whale watching boat.

5 people died, and one remains missing after the Leviathan II went down in the waters west of Vargas Island, late Sunday afternoon.

There were 27 people on board.

The British government says all 5 of the confirmed dead, were British citizens.

The BC Coroners Service says they were 4 men and 1 woman, and three were tourists, while two lived in Canada.  The woman lived in BC and one of the men was living in Ontario.

The youngest was 18 and the oldest 76.

A statement from the tour operators, Jamie’s Whaling Station, says they’ll work with authorities to find out what happened… and their “hearts go out to the families, friends and loved ones of everyone involved.”

Premier Christy Clark has also released a statement.  “My thoughts and my prayers and those of all British Columbians go out
to the families and the loved ones of those that were lost or injured… My thanks to all those involved in the rescue and the response and for their efforts during this tragic incident.”

The District of Tofino says it plans to hold a community gathering and potluck tonight.  Many from the town and the nearby Ahousaht First Nation were involved in the rescue effort.
