Municipality of North Cowichan recognized as leader in environmental sustainability 

The Municipality of North Cowichan has received the Climate and Energy Action Award for their net-zero RCMP building.  

According to the municipality, the award was presented to seven communities and recognizes BC municipalities, regional districts and Indigenous communities that show leadership in climate action and sustainability.  

A media release says the judges described the facility as ‘a collaboration showcase’ for bringing together all levels of policing, and a dedicated space for Indigenous  

The building was boasted by the judges as they highlighted some of the key aspects of the facility which they say is classified as high-performance.  

“This facility is all-electric, including an air filtration system to protect against wildfire smoke,” they say. “Heat pumps and a 100-kilowatt rooftop solar array are helping to reduce energy by 77 per cent, and greenhouse gas emissions by 97 per cent. 

“Daylight sensors and exterior sunshades cut lighting loads by 25 per cent and reduce 45 per cent of cooling demand.” 

A total of 29 nominations were submitted this year, including plans and strategies, transportation initiatives, new and renovated buildings, energy projects and public engagement initiatives.
