Names of Tofino victims released, search resumes for missing man

Searchers were back on the water near Tofino Wednesday, trying to find signs of an Australian man still missing after Sunday’s sinking of the whale watching boat Leviathan II.

On Tuesday, the Coroners Service released the names of 5 British citizens who died.

They were 63-year-old Nigel Hooker, 50-year-old David Thomas, his son 18-year-old Stephen, 29-year-old Katie Taylor who’d been living in Whistler, and 76-year-old Jack Slater who lived in Toronto.

Regional Coroner Matt Brown says their investigation could take up to a year, and there’s been no decision yet about an inquest.

Brown also says they’re getting a picture of the chaotic minutes after the boat capsized, after talking with some of the rescuers and survivors.

The Transportation Safety Board, meanwhile, says the early stages of their investigation point to the boat being hit by a wave while most passengers and crew were on one side of the upper deck, which could have affected the boat’s stability.
