Police warn locals about child pornography scam, others

Police say there is a new scam in the Cowichan Valley that tries to get people to give away personal information because of panic and shock.

They say a man recently got a call from somebody claiming to be from the Cyber Crimes Control Board of Canada and was told that his computer is being used to distribute child pornography.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP Cpl. Krista Hobday says the scammer told the man that he would have to access his computer to stop it.

Hobday says the man spoke to someone named Shawn Patrick and then later Alfred Jones after he told the first person that it wasn’t a good idea.

She says the second man claimed to live in Ottawa at 269 Laurier Ave. and his phone number is 613-482-6363.

Meanwhile,  North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP say people should think twice about trying to collect a prize they have won from a yellow card found in the mail.

They say a concerned local contacted them after getting one that stated they had won one hundred dollars in gas rebates at Esso, Shell, Petro-Canada and other stations.
Police say the resident didn’t think it was real…so an officer called the number on the card and was asked to provide banking or credit card information to pay for the processing fee.
Contact the detachment if you have seen this scam, or any others.
