Coalition wants to keep Fall Prevention Week message in the spotlight all month

1 in 3 people over the age of 65 fall each year, and many suffer serious injuries requiring weeks of hospitalization or bed-rest.

The BC Falls and Injury Prevention Coalition, which includes Island Health and Vancouver Coastal Health, is trying to raise awareness about ways to prevent falls, especially among seniors.

Heather Fudge is a Clinical Nurse specializing in Senior’s Health.

She says seniors and their families can follow 4 simple strategies: Stay physically active, make homes safer by adding handrails and clearing away tripping hazards, make sure medications are reviewed regularly, and get yearly eye examinations

Fudge says serious falls often cause seniors to lose their Independence. 40% of residential care admissions are due to a serious fall.
